Five highlights from five years!

Looking over the past five years since Hope2Others began, we’ve seen evidence after evidence of God’s faithfulness and goodness. We were encouraged to look back and are at amazed at what He’s done, and we want to remember with you some of the highlights in hopes that you too will be impressed by the God we serve.

1.	Missions Camp

The first highlight actually happened before H2O ever started. In 2005, God led us through word of mouth to a little camp up in Troutlake, WA, named Camp Jonah (www.campjonah.com). We had no idea that this first summer camp of ours would so drastically change our lives. Through living like refugees for a day and half at the camp, we learned just some of the hope that can be given to homeless people in physical and spiritual ways.

2.	Do Hard Things

In 2007, two friends of ours, Alex and Brett Harris, started writing a book called “Do Hard Things: A teenage rebellion against low expectations.” When they asked us if they could write about our story in their book, we had no idea to what extent God was going to use this. This one highlight, which we literally had nothing to do with, turned into one of the biggest catalysts for H2O.

3.	Website

13-year-old Matthew Reynolds read our story in the Harris twins’ book, visited our blog, and went on to email us, asking if he could make us a website. So on January 1, 2009, we launched our first H2O website, which opened the door to share information about H2O easily and effectively and to have an online starter kit, making H2O available to hundreds of other churches and communities.

4.	Promo video

Last summer, a friend from church offered to help us make a promo video for H2O. Grant Blomdahl is a gifted videographer and was gracious to invest his gifts in this way. Check out the final product at http://vimeo.com/13588930.

5.	Watching God work

The last highlight overall has been seeing God prove Himself faithful time and time again. We’ve seen Him answer prayer in remarkable ways. We’ve watched Him exceed our expectations. We’ve been humbled as He’s shown us how His perfect plans are better than our lowly ideals. We hope you catch a glimpse with us of the joy of seeing God grow His kingdom. It is a delight for you and I to get to be a part of that! Thank you for your support over these past five years. We can’t wait to see where God leads over the next five!

Last Friday, H2O got a shipment of 100 new t-shirts, just in time to sell at our first booth at a missions conference! Why are we so excited?

Well, first of all, these are miracle shirts. We were planning to leave our house for the missions conference at 11:00a.m., and they weren't expected to arrive until 3:00p.m. that afternoon. So we decided to pray and ask that if God desired that He would bring the shirts early. Turns out, the postman showed up at our door at 10:30 a.m. that morning with a big box of 100 H2O t-shirts! So we want you all to be encouraged that our God hears and answers prayers. May He get all the glory!

Also, there are shirts left over! Which means, if you and some of your friends want some, send us an email at laurenreavely@h2obags.com with the number and sizes you want! They're Gildan shirts, 100% cotton, preshrunk. $12, plus shipping. Let us know if you'd like one!

Happy New Year! It's hard to believe another year is over and a new one is beginning. Thank you for the support you showed us in 2010. We appreciate all of you who pray for and encourage us as we serve God through H2O.

We spent a few minutes today looking back on 2010 and all that God did this year. Some of the highlights were presenting a workshop at the Mission ConneXion NW conference in January, challenging several youth groups to take action for Jesus, filming our new promo video, sharing our story and filling H2O bags with hundreds of kids this summer at Camp Jonah, handing out H2O bags to homeless in Alaska, distributing hundreds of bags to homeless in downtown Portland with eager youth, and panhandling on World Homeless Day to raise $500 for H2O. It's been an incredible year, and we're grateful to all of you who have been a part of it physically and prayerfully.

Please keep praying as this new year unfolds. We have another exciting speaking opportunity coming up at the end of this month with this year's Mission ConneXion NW conference. Pray that many will catch the vision of Hope2Others and that more hurting people will find hope as a result.

We're excited about all that God has yet to do through Hope2Others in 2011!

World Homeless Day: Guest Post from Matthew

Matthew is our webdesigner from Virginia. In the last year, he's started his own H2O location at his church, and on World Homeless Day, he also led a group of people in panhandling. Check out what he and his friends experienced and learned through panhandling.

Today was World Homeless Day. This morning started off in front of our church congregation as I and a friend presented to our church our progress with our recent H2O bag packing, encouraged them to pick up some bags, and explained to them what we'd be doing this afternoon. We started "panhandling for panhandlers" by taking up an offering after our presentation, and then we went into our city with four groups of about three teens each panhandling on medians at intersections. We carried large cardboard signs that said, "Help Us Help the Homeless," buckets for donations, and H2O fliers to give to donors. We started this afternoon not knowing what kind of a reaction we'd get, but we were willing to put ourselves in the shoes of real panhandlers to raise money for them.

A lot of people looked the other way and completely ignored us, others pulled out their phones and iPods. Even people I knew from other churches ignored us. One woman stopped and yelled at us, "Aren't you just ashamed of yourselves?"--she thought we were claiming to be homeless, but even when we explained what we were doing, she still didn't want to help us or even take a flier. Another woman donated a dollar, took a flier, and a few minutes later came back and demanded her dollar given back to her because she saw that we were a Christian organization. One man gave us a few dollars and went on to say that he wasn't sure that he himself wouldn't be homeless in the near future.

But there were also people who gave a couple dollars without thinking. One man and his son took a flier, and about an hour later came back and donated $20. They said they were also interested in starting an H2O chapter at their church. There were other (relatively) generous people as well. We raised about $500 in total, and we can't wait to put that to use buying supplies for our H2O bags and to purchase other items for homeless people we've met.

Today really was just a huge reminder to us that when we see people in need, what do we do? Do we ignore them? Do we pretend not to see them? Any of us could be in that same position at any time; our financial status is not secure. The only thing we can hold on to is Christ... and being "homeless" for a couple hours raising money really woke us up. One man stopped and (rather rudely) told us to get a job, then drove away. On his bumper? A fish symbol.

Are we as Christians really being "little Christs," or are we doing more harm to the image of Christ than good?

"And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me. Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.'" - Matthew 25:40-43

Recap on World Homeless Day

World Homeless Day, 10/10/10, was a great success! In Portland, OR, almost 50 volunteers spent their afternoon panhandling at several different exits to raise awareness and money for local H2O groups. After a couple hours of panhandling, we regrouped to debrief over pizza and root beer floats. Everyone had stories to share. Many of which consisted of lessons learned while being on the other side of the cardboard sign.

We learned a lot and had a great time, but we weren't the only ones panhandling. Other groups in other states panhandled to raise money for their H2O locations. Keep checking back here for stories from volunteer panhandlers.

World Homeless Day is more than a day to change lives of homeless people around us. It's a day when our lives change. Through "Panhandle for Panhandlers", we're put in the shoes of a panhandler, seeing life from their perspective.

Save the date for next year's World Homeless Day, 10/10/11! We hope you can join us.

World Homeless Day is just around the corner! On October 10, 2010, millions of people around the world will be taking action to change the lives of homeless people in their local communities. We're putting on an event to address the panhandling side of homelessness and invites you and your friends to get involved by hosting the event where you live.

Get a group of friends together, and on 10/10/10, target several freeway exits in groups of two or more and "panhandle" in order to raise money for H2O bags. Each group should hold a cardboard sign that reads something similar to, "Panhandling for panhandlers. Donate to help." Once someone donates, give the driver an H2O flier containing more information about Hope2Others.

For more information on the event and to download fliers and other resources, go to www.H2Obags.com/whd.
